Friday May 13: Good or Bad Luck?

Usually I don't notice whether Friday the 13 is lucky or not for me.

There have been a couple of exceptions, February 1981 and November 1992.

The former was the date of my father's funeral and the latter was the day I was in a car accident.

But this May 13 is definitely lucky for fans of Stevie Wonder, born 72 years ago today!

  1. In the Jewish tradition, both the number (13) and the day (Friday) are positively auspicious. The Christian world has long held that the echo of the Last Supper has an ominous tinge on all Fridays that fall on the thirteenth.
I do my best not to give it too much weight. Mostly because there's nothing I can do about it. Just the fact so many others are feeling leery on such days increases the odds of things going awry somehow. Same for the astrological concept of "Mercury in Retrograde." I don't think there objective reality to it, but so many do that it does in fact have an effect.
Today is both Friday the thirteenth and Mercury is in retrograde. :(

    1. Your theory about self-fulfilling prophecy may have some truth to it. But, about Mercury in retrograde, I assure you that I didn't do anything to make our tv die yesterday or our printer go awry on Wednesday.

Going to listen to "Superstition" again to calm down. :-)

    3. Mirka, I know why Friday is auspicious; Friday at sunset is the beginning of Sabbath. But why is 13 also lucky for Jewish people?

    4. Males become bearers of Mitzvot, or "Bar Mitzvah"

  2. Since I was born on a Friday, the 13th (September), I always find it lucky. :D

    1. Robin, I'm glad it has that good association for you. M likes the number because M is the 13th letter of the alphabet. :-)

  3. Interesting. Today, May 13th is the 105th anniversary of the apparition of Mary at Fatima, Portugal. I think that she chose this date to crush any superstitious ideas about anything diabolical associated with the number 13. As to Friday--our Lord redeemed us on a Friday makes it a Good Friday. Always a day of a little penance but special to me also because Max was born on a Friday.
